Psychometrics

PsychometricsWhat are psychometric tests?

The word psychometric is formed from the Greek words for mental and measurement. Psychometric tests attempt to objectively measure aspects of your mental ability or your personality.

There are two main types of psychometric tests:

  • Ability Tests – measure your ability to perform or carry out different tasks, such as verbal, numerical or reasoning ability.
  • Personality Questionnaires – measure your way of doing things, and specifically the way you interact with your environment and other people.
Psychometric testing is now used by over 80% of the Fortune 500 companies in the USA and by over 75% of the Times Top 100 companies in the UK. Tests are used by many employers across most sectors, including IT, engineering, energy, banking, consultancy, accountancy, the civil service and other public sector, fast moving consumer goods and retail.

What are psychometrics used for?

Psychometric tests can be used in a range of applications including recruitment/selection and development.

We use psychometrics with the individuals and teams we work with to support to leadership development, team development, conflict management and to improve communications. The self awareness people get from the reports we provide helps them not only to understand their own style better but to ‘get’ their colleagues and to learn how to interact and communicate with them in a more effective way.

We also use psychometrics to support a range of activities in assessment and development centres, where the information they provide can contribute to robust decision making about the most suitable candidates for particular roles or development and coaching requirements.
