Setting Goals and Objectives – the pain-free way
At this time of year we are all busy setting goals and objectives for the coming year, and it can be a difficult process.  In working with teams, I observe several typical challenges that can hinder the process, but can be countered by observing a few simple rules:
- be clear about the desired outputs, or deliverables – agree what success will look like
- define some specific metrics – what will you measure along the way?
- have one agreed format for SMART objective setting, so that different people across the organisation aren’t doing things in different waysÂ
- be clear about how high level goals and objectives will translate down through the organisation, and agree a communications plan
- ensure that goals and objectives reflect the contributions of all functions, particularly in matrix structures where projects and products have multiple contributors, and sometimes even multiple owners.
Et voilà ! The key is to keep it simple, clear and communicate well. One of the keys to positive staff engagement is that people know how their goals and objectives fit in to the overall picture, so make sure to maintain a good fit between your high-level plans right down to every individual’s goals and objectives, and you’re on the right path. Good luck!
